Abstract

The field of financial econometrics has exploded over the last decade. This book represents an integration of theory, methods, and examples using the S-PLUS statistical modeling language and the S+FinMetrics module to facilitate the practice of financial econometrics. This is the first book to show the power of S-PLUS for the analysis of time series data. It is written for researchers and practitioners in the finance industry, academic researchers in economics and finance, and advanced MBA and graduate students in economics and finance. Readers are assumed to have a basic knowledge of S-PLUS and a solid grounding in basic statistics and time series concepts. This second edition is updated to cover S+FinMetrics 2.0 and includes new chapters on copulas, nonlinear regime switching models, continuous-time financial models, generalized method of moments, semi-nonparametric conditional density models, and the efficient method of moments. Eric Zivot is an associate professor and Gary Waterman Distinguished Scholar in the Economics Department, and adjunct associate professor of finance in the Business School at the University of Washington. He regularly teaches courses on econometric theory, financial econometrics and time series econometrics, and is the recipient of the Henry T. Buechel Award for Outstanding Teaching. He is an associate editor of Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics. He has published papers in the leading econometrics journals, including Econometrica, Econometric Theory, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Econometrics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Jiahui Wang is a Principal and Trading Research Officer at Barclays Global Investors. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington in 1997. He has published in leading econometrics journals such as Econometrica and Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and is the Principal Investigator of National Science Foundation SBIR grants. In 2002 Dr. Wang was selected as one of the "2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 21st Century" by International Biographical Centre.

Abstract

This new edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide has bene?tted from the comments of many individuals, which have resulted in the addition of some new material, and the reorganization of some of the rest. The most obvious change is the creation of a separate Chapter 7 on convex analysis. Parts of this chapter appeared in elsewhere in the second edition, but much of it is new to the third edition. In particular, there is an expanded discussion of support points of convex sets, and a new section on subgradients of convex functions. There is much more material on the special properties of convex sets and functions in ?nite dimensional spaces. There are improvements and additions in almost every chapter. There is more new material than might seem at ?rst glance, thanks to a change in font that - duced the page count about ?ve percent. We owe a huge debt to Valentina Galvani, Daniela Puzzello, and Francesco Rusticci, who were participants in a graduate seminar at Purdue University and whose suggestions led to many improvements, especially in chapters ?ve through eight. We particularly thank Daniela Puzzello for catching uncountably many errors throughout the second edition, and simplifying the statements of several theorems and proofs. In another graduate seminar at Caltech, many improvements and corrections were suggested by Joel Grus, PJ Healy, Kevin Roust, Maggie Penn, and Bryan Rogers.

Abstract

Competition and efficiency is at the core of economic theory. This volume collects papers of leading scholars, which extend the conventional general equilibrium model in important ways: Efficiency and price regulation are studied when markets are incomplete and existence of equilibria in such settings is proven under very general preference assumptions. The model is extended to include geographical location choice, a commodity space incorporating manufacturing imprecision and preferences for club-membership, schools and firms. Inefficiencies arising from household externalities or group membership are evaluated. Core equivalence is shown for bargaining economies. The theory of risk aversion is extended and the relation between risk taking and wealth is experimentally investigated. Other topics include determinacy in OLG with cash-in-advance constraints, income distribution and democracy in OLG, learning in OLG and in games, optimal pricing of derivative securities, the impact of heterogeneity at the individual level for aggregate consumption, and adaptive contracting in view of uncertainty.

This book has been prepared during my work as a research assistant at the Institute for Statistics and Econometrics of the Economics Department at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. It was accepted as a Ph.D. thesis titled "Term Structure Modeling and Estimation in a State Space Framework" at the Department of Economics of the University of Bielefeld in November 2004. It is a pleasure for me to thank all those people who have been helpful in one way or another during the completion of this work. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my advisor Professor Joachim Frohn, not only for his guidance and advice throughout the com­ pletion of my thesis but also for letting me have four very enjoyable years teaching and researching at the Institute for Statistics and Econometrics. I am also grateful to my second advisor Professor Willi Semmler. The project I worked on in one of his seminars in 1999 can really be seen as a starting point for my research on state space models. Abstract

A mechanism is a mathematical structure that models institutions through which economic activity is guided and coordinated. There are many such institutions; markets are the most familiar ones. Lawmakers, administrators and officers of private companies create institutions in order to achieve desired goals. They seek to do so in ways that economize on the resources needed to operate the institutions, and that provide incentives that induce the required behaviors. This book presents systematic procedures for designing mechanisms that achieve specified performance, and economize on the resources required to operate the mechanism. The systematic design procedures are algorithms for designing informationally efficient mechanisms. Most of the book deals with these procedures of design. When there are finitely many environments to be dealt with, and there is a Nash-implementing mechanism, our algorithms can be used to make that mechanism into an informationally efficient one. Informationally efficient dominant strategy implementation is also studied.

Abstract

Basic principles underlying the transactions of ?nancial markets are tied to probability and statistics. Accordingly it is natural that books devoted to mathematical ?nance are dominated by stochastic methods. Only in recent years, spurred by the enormous economical success of ?nancial derivatives, a need for sophisticated computational technology has developed. For - ample, to price an American put, quantitative analysts have asked for the numerical solution of a free-boundary partial di?erential equation. Fast and accurate numerical algorithms have become essential tools to price ?nancial derivatives and to manage portfolio risks. The required methods aggregate to the new ?eld of Computational Finance. This discipline still has an aura of mysteriousness; the ?rst specialists were sometimes called rocket scientists. So far, the emerging ?eld of computational ?nance has hardly been discussed in the mathematical ?nance literature. This book attempts to ?ll the gap. Basic principles of computational ?nance are introduced in a monograph with textbook character. The book is divided into four parts, arranged in six chapters and seven appendices. Abstract

The theory of stochastic integration, also called the Ito calculus, has a large spectrum of applications in virtually every scientific area involving random functions, but it can be a very difficult subject for people without much mathematical background. The Ito calculus was originally motivated by the construction of Markov diffusion processes from infinitesimal generators. Previously, the construction of such processes required several steps, whereas Ito constructed these diffusion processes directly in a single step as the solutions of stochastic integral equations associated with the infinitesimal generators. Moreover, the properties of these diffusion processes can be derived from the stochastic integral equations and the Ito formula. This introductory textbook on stochastic integration provides a concise introduction to the Ito calculus, and covers the following topics: * Constructions of Brownian motion; * Stochastic integrals for Brownian motion and martingales; * The Ito formula; * Multiple Wiener-Ito integrals; * Stochastic differential equations; * Applications to finance, filtering theory, and electric circuits. The reader should have a background in advanced calculus and elementary probability theory, as well as a basic knowledge of measure theory and Hilbert spaces. Each chapter ends with a variety of exercises designed to help the reader further understand the material. Hui-Hsiung Kuo is the Nicholson Professor of Mathematics at Louisiana State University. He has delivered lectures on stochastic integration at Louisiana State University, Cheng Kung University, Meijo University, and University of Rome "Tor Vergata," among others. He is also the author of Gaussian Measures in Banach Spaces (Springer 1975), and White Noise Distribution Theory (CRC Press 1996), and a memoir of his childhood growing up in Taiwan, An Arrow Shot into the Sun (Abridge Books 2004).

Abstract

Recently economists have more and more focussed on scenarios in which agents' views of the world may be erroneous. These notes introduce the concept of perfect forecasting rules which provide best least-squares predictions along the evolution of an economic system. The framework for nonparametric adaptive learning schemes is developed and it is argued that plausible learning schemes should aim at estimating a perfect forecasting rule taking into account the correct feedback structure of an economy. A link is provided between the traditional rational-expectations view and recent behavioristic approaches.
